Volunteer work, internships, and courses that challenged her understanding of justice led Shandra Steininger to the helm of an impactful nonprofit for teens experiencing homelessness.

Describe the influence your social work professors have had on your experience at Calvin.

I didn't start at Calvin knowing I wanted to study social work, honestly, I didn't even know what it was. But from the first class I took it just 'clicked'. I still remember in my intro class being challenged to do the hard work of self-evaluation and personal growth while striving to understand my own mental health in order to be the best I could be in my career. Later in a policy class, my professors candor in talking about macro social work and the systemic and institutional challenges our world faces solidified my passion for community and organizational practice.

What opportunities did you find at Calvin to explore your interest in social work outside of the classroom?

Calvin is rich with opportunities to expand your knowledge and experience base. For me, a volunteer experience at Headstart and my internship at Family Futures shaped my career path by defining my interest in supporting young families and children. The diversity of perspective that I was surrounded with, between professors, guest speakers and other students, truly expanded my world view beyond what i thought was possible.

What would you want to tell someone starting their journey at Calvin?

Be bold. Try new things. Step into different opportunities, even if they are uncomfortable.

Be open to new experiences and always stay curious.

What is one thing that surprised you about Calvin?

How many opportunities to be pushed and challenged there are.

Describe some things about your time at Calvin that specifically prepared you for what you are doing now.

The SW program honestly is high quality. Grad school was a breeze for me and I felt like I got a really solid experience.

Describe what you are doing now and what you love about it.

I have had the incredible opportunity to work in a variety of organizations that serve families and youth. Three years ago I was honored with the opportunity to co-found and serve as the Executive Director at HQ, a drop-in center for 14-24 year olds who are experiencing unsafe/unstable housing.

My educational from Calvin, in addition to the professional experiences I've had since then prepared me for this role. Every day I get to step in to the intersection of my skills, passions, and personal experiences. I am challenged and hope to challenge the status quo and push our community towards being more affirming, safe and equitable for all its members.
