Go beyond the classroom and take advantage of all the opportunities the politics program offers.
What was the best part of being in this department?
The political science department does an excellent job of hosting relevant events that can help students learn about different career options, issue areas, or current events. For instance, the department hosted viewing parties and panel sessions during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, and I found it helpful to have access to our professors and their insights during such a tumultuous political season.
What was a class in this department that particularly affected you?
I loved taking American Constitutional Fundamentals with Professor Watson. The course laid the groundwork for my understanding of our legal system, and also gave me the opportunity to learn from my classmates in debate or group-project settings. I was also challenged to draft my own additional amendment to the Constitution in this class, something that was difficult but extremely rewarding.
What’s one thing you would want to tell someone starting their journey at Calvin?
Take the time to get to know your professors. Visit them during open hours and take advantage of the fact that you have such excellent scholars and researchers at your disposal. Their guidance is invaluable as you determine where you’re heading after undergrad.
How has your faith grown at Calvin?
One way my faith has grown at Calvin is that I’ve come to understand its outward implications. Faith is personal, yes, but it must also be public. Public expressions of faith look different for everyone, but for political scientists especially, we must consider how our interactions with states, governments, communities, and institutions are God-glorifying. Today, I’m no longer content with a faith that is alive only within the walls of a church. My faith must transcend every aspect of my life—including the political.
What’s one thing that surprised you about Calvin?
I was not expecting Calvin to be a place where I would meet friends from across the globe. In the political science and international relations departments especially, I met and befriended students from a vast variety of cultures and experiences. Getting to know them and having their perspectives in my classes and in my life definitely enriched my experience at Calvin.
What is your favorite space on campus, and why?
My favorite space is the chapel, where I was able to lead worship and sing in many choir concerts throughout my time here.
Did you receive any scholarships or financial aid at Calvin?
Yes, I received academic scholarships and named scholarships while at Calvin.
