In studying political science at Calvin, I unexpectedly discovered how concrete and methodical the discipline is.

What was a class in this department that particularly affected you?

POLS207, International Cooperation and Conflict with Professor Westra - taken first semester freshman year it kicked my butt and gave me a less than gentle introduction to college - and I have never regretted it. 

What was something unexpected you discovered about this discipline?

How concrete and methodical the discipline is. Often, when telling people you belong to the political science department, they think you just write essays about your opinions - but that is not the case it all. While it is true that there is not always a right or wrong answer, the theories and research methods that make political science a “science” played an integral role in my education.

What’s one thing you would want to tell someone starting their journey at Calvin?

Get uncomfortable - there is something new for everyone at Calvin, so try something you haven’t before. Everyone wants to learn more about themselves, but the only way to do that is to learn more about the things around you. Plus, even if you hate it, at least you’ll have a story to tell!

What about Calvin specifically prepared you for where you’re at now? 

Calvin provides plenty of opportunities for growth, but does not force them upon you. Therefore, it is up to you what you make of your experience and where you choose to take it - both on and off campus. This independence helped me push myself to get the grades, have the experiences, and meet the people that helped me decide to go to (and get into) grad school. I am at Pepperdine School of Public Policy. 

What part of Calvin’s mission resonates with you, and why?

“Act Justly” has always resonated with me the most. As a political science student and the daughter of an immigrant I have always had a passion for equality and the oft vague term “justice”. The Political Science department takes good care of this term and integrates it into its courses with both great care and, what looks like, great ease. Calvin has taught me that as children of God, it is our responsibility to not only act the way He would, but know what that means as well.
