As a student at Calvin, Stephen Clark ’10 traversed from the Knollcrest East apartments to Calvin’s main campus every day using Calvin’s Crossing. “I was amazed how the light and shadows could transform the interior space of the bridge,” he said.
Clark, a fine arts major, was so intrigued that he decided to create a painting of the overpass: “I wanted to create a painting for ArtPrize that would allow the viewer to be ‘inside’ the picture. To do so, I chose an image with a strong one-point perspective. The Beltline bridge was a perfect example, because it not only allows the viewer to look down the corridor, but it also creates the possibility to see outside the windows and imagine a space beyond that which can be seen.”
The resulting Beltline was among the top 25 in 2D entries in the most recent ArtPrize, a Grand Rapids, Mich., art competition that draws entries from all over the world. The piece, now exhibited in the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex, was purchased by an anonymous buyer and gifted to Calvin.
