Christianity Today has named its 2017 book award winners, and two of the honorees are publications previously featured in Spark.
You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit (Brazos) by Calvin philosophy professor James K.A. Smith was recognized in the Spiritual Formation category. In the book, Smith asserts that to be human is to have a heart, so it’s not a matter of whether or not you will love something as ultimate. Rather the question is what you will love. And you are what you love.
Ruined: A Memoir (Tyndale) by Ruth Huizenga Everhart ’79 was recognized in the CT Women category. The book is a recounting of the night intruders raped Everhart and four college roommates at gunpoint in their off-campus house; it also documents her struggles for nearly four decades after the harrowing crime. Everhart offers hope to others who have struggled with the trauma and support for victims who are plagued by feelings of worthlessness and self-reproach.
