Studying neuroscience at Calvin will prepare you for daring research and discovery in this integrated and evolving field. Calvin’s neuroscience program is an emphasis within three different programs. You’ll fulfill the requirements of your major department and take additional courses from other fields to complete the emphasis.
Cutting edge
Be prepared for the challenge of neuroscientific discovery before you even have a degree. Work side-by-side with professors doing research in numerous facilities on campus.
Interdisciplinary
A multi-faceted science requires a multi-faceted program. Pursue a detailed understanding of neuroscience from multiple fields including psychology, chemistry, physics, biology, philosophy, computer science, and much more.
Deep understanding
Neuroscience is not only the study of mind and brain; it's about the whole person. Calvin’s approach to faith and the sciences will empower you to ask hard questions and discover new answers.
Concentrate on neuroscience in...
Psychology
Investigate the connections among cognition, behavior, and brain function.
Chemistry/Biochemistry
Focus on the chemical sciences to link neurotransmitters, chemicals, and behavior.
Biology
Explore genetics, brain structure, and so much more to further inform cognitive theory.

Research and Experience
- Join with a professor to research brain development and structure, brain responses to emotion, relationships between cerebral hemispheres and humor, neurotransmitters, and much more.
- Pursue your curiosity by doing work on Grand Rapid’s “Medical Mile.” Work at the Van Andel Institute or intern at any number of medical facilities downtown for integrated, hands-on experience.
- Design and execute research projects to present at academic conferences or publish in journals.
- Take advantage of Calvin’s liberal arts curriculum to gain a well-rounded neuroscientific perspective. Take courses in philosophy, computer science, mathematics, physics, speech pathology, and much more.
