Over 70 members of the Calvin Gospel Choir, under the director of conductor Nate Glasper, will perform 4-5 selections from the late 1600s to the present which highlight the relationship between historical events and the evolution of four distinctive musical genres—spirituals, blues, jazz, and gospel. Special guest musicians will contribute additional pieces to the concert repertoire. Each song will be introduced by a succinct description of its historical context. Seating is general admission.
Thanks to a grant from Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, this concert is free to all!
The Calvin Gospel Choir is an enthusiastic, engaging, and inspirational ensemble comprised of musically talented persons from various locations, races, and creeds. CALL companion course
Along with being a signature event for Homecoming & Family Weekend, this concert is a capstone event for the Calvin Academy for Lifelong Learning's fall course on this topic. CALL's free "400 Years of African American Music History" course is offered on the four Wednesdays of September, either in person (3:15–4:30 p.m. in the Chapel) or online (watch any time, anywhere).
