In this lecture, Dr. Ma unveils the structural mechanisms be- hind the changing landscape of Protestantism in mainland China.

Dr. Ma will introduce the background of her ethnograph- ic project and present oral history narratives ranging from underground house churches in the 1970s, mass conversion after 1989, student converts on university campus in the 1990s, openly worshipping unregistered urban churches in the 2000s, and registered churches facing costly discipleship during the de-crossing campaigns from 2014 to 2017. The lecture will be concluded by a book-signing activity.

About the presenter: Dr. Li Ma (Mary) obtained a PhD in sociology from Cornell University (2010). Mary experienced a deep conversion into the Christian faith in Ithaca New York when writing her dissertation on China’s internal migration and urban inequality. Since then, her academic interests broadened to include theology, missiology and church history, while teaching sociology at a top university in Shanghai. Since 2012, a research grant allowed her to join the Henry Institute for the Study of Christianity and Politics at Calvin College as a research fellow. Her first book on Chinese Christianity, Surviving the State, Remaking the Church: A Socio-logical Portrait of Christians in Mainland China, was published last December. Her forthcoming book this summer will be The Chinese Exodus: A Theology of Migration, Urbanism and Alienation in Contemporary China.
