Investigating Naturally Acquired Immunity to Malaria: Systems Immunology and Human Cohort Studies

The last two decades have seen unprecedented investment in malaria research, however malaria continues to be responsible for close to half a million deaths annually (mostly among children under the age of 5). While the mortality associated with malaria is sobering, there is clear evidence that individuals who live in malaria endemic regions are capable of developing a certain level of immunity against malaria. By studying naturally acquired immunity among exposed populations, we hope to not only gain new insights into the pathogenesis of this disease, but also hope to identify correlates of immunity that could form the basis for rational design of an effective vaccine. This talk will provide a brief overview of malaria immunology and discuss data from studies conducted in Kenya and Ghana aimed at understanding the mechanisms responsible for naturally acquired immunity to malaria. The talk will also speak to the general importance of building biomedical research capacity in Africa.
