In my lab we have demonstrated that arteries and veins are innervated by different sympathetic neurons in sympathetic ganglia. In the mesenteric circulation veins are a major blood reservoir and arteries regulate blood flow distribution. Constriction of veins mobilizes blood into the general circulation and constriction of arteries reduces flow; both of these has the potential to raise blood pressure. Our studies are directed at understanding how the selective innervation of arteries and veins impacts blood pressure elevation in salt-sensitive hypertension in rats.
