Group B Streptococcus Infections During Pregnancy: What is the Difference Between Non-hemolytic and Hemolytic Strains?

Presenter: Olivia Harlow- Calvin University

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) remains a leading infectious cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in the US, and it persists as a public health threat worldwide. GBS is a beta-hemolytic bacteria, but about three percent of strains are non-hemolytic. It recently has been shown that these non-hemolytic strains can also cause detrimental health problems in infants. Our lab has worked to understand the difference between hemolytic and non-hemolytic strains using in vitro cell models and genetic expression experiments.

Effects of Dam Removal on the Boardman Macroinvertebrate Community

Presenter: James Eapen- Calvin University

The Boardman River is a river in northern Michigan that drains into the Grand Traverse Bay. There were three dams on the river that were removed and the original stream channel restored. AuSable Institute studied the macroinvertebrate communities since they provide an measure of stream health to see whether the dam removals improve stream quality.
