Title: "Indiana Jones and the Bunsen Burner"
Guest Speaker: Darrel Rohl - Calvin University, Archaeology
Archaeology is the study of the human past based on the physical/material remains of human activities. This study is multi-disciplinary in nature, involving experts from across the natural and social sciences as well as from across the arts and humanities. Archaeological Science is one of the fastest growing subfields, employing cutting-edge field and laboratory techniques to the analysis of archaeological materials to advance our knowledge of the human past, sometimes overturning long-held historical understandings. This lecture provides a general introduction to recent contributions from chemistry and biochemistry, including chemical dating methods, residue analysis that is reconstructing ancient diets and recipes, the identification of pigments that are adding color to monochrome images of the past, and more. The lecture ends by introducing Calvin's own archaeological work at Umm al-Jimal, Jordan, and inviting faculty and students to join us in this work, particularly through the application of chemistry and biochemistry methods.
