Dr Nie will speak to us about the development of China's online game industry and how it provides an example of the interaction of new technologies and politics in the commercialization and globalization of China's cultural economy.
The analysis of online games about China's Resistance War against Japan (1937–1945) highlights the interplay of the state's political agenda, business interests, and nationalistic sentiments as online games are planned, designed, and consumed in contemporary China. It reveals that the Party-state has candidly integrated online game technology into its expanding propaganda domain and utilized it for propagating official ideology.
Dr Annie Hongping Nie is Chair of Examiners and Teaching Associate at the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford. She is also a Research Associate at University of Oxford China Centre and Senior Member of St Antony’s College, University of Oxford. Dr Nie is from China and studied at Calvin College (1995) and at Biola University (PhD 2005). Her research interests include national memory, patriotic education, state building and nationalism in contemporary China.
