The Knollcrest Campus at 50: A “Sound Environment, Physical as Well as Intellectual”
Presenters: Craig Hanson, Brent Williams, and Natalie Sytsma
In 1959 William Fyfe completed the master plan for Calvin’s new Knollcrest campus. With most planned buildings finished by 1973, the transition from the Franklin campus to the new one — a process that stretched over years — was complete, the older campus was closed, and President Bill Spoelhof’s vision of a modern and culturally-engaged Christian liberal arts college had become a reality for a community of scholars, both students and faculty. Luminous (Documentary Film Screening with Q & A)
Presenters: Larry Molnar and Sam Smartt
Calvin Astronomy Professor Larry Molnar believes he can find the unfindable a star that is about to explode. When Larry and a small team of students stumble across a strange star, they embark on a dramatic journey of scientific discovery, which brings the unlikely team into the international spotlight. But others in the astronomical community are skeptical, and Larry’s professional reputation hangs in the balance. In production since 2014, Luminous, a feature documentary by award-winning filmmaker and Calvin Film Professor Sam Smartt (Wagonmasters), follows Larry’s journey to test his unprecedented prediction, knowing that its success or failure will unfold squarely in the international spotlight.
Following the screening, Larry and Sam will field questions from the audience.
