The Quest to Manage an 'Ecological Menace': Managing Brown Treesnakes on the Island of Guam

  • Friday, March 11, 2022
  • 1:30 PM–2:20 PM
  • Online via Teams

Brown treesnakes were accidentally introduced to Guam in the 1940s and caused large-scale ecosystem collapse of native species. Multi-organization efforts are all focused on the suppression and potential eradication of brown treesnakes on the island with the hopes of eventual species reintroduction efforts. I will discuss our approaches to managing this species, particularly my work modeling the density of snakes to better understand the effects of removal efforts. I will also discuss how cross-disciplinary efforts allow us to innovate potential solutions to such a challenging invasive species and have hope for the future of Guam's biodiversity.
