A gunshot rang out on the night of January 5, 1563, on the darkened Strand, in Elizabethan London. The weapon was fired by an Italian assassin, who had been hired and brought to London by a French nobleman, in order to kill an Italian courtier. The assassination attempt, and subsequent investigation, caused a diplomatic and political debacle that involved the French, Spanish and English governments. It also included, strangely enough, servants' codpieces, bottle stoppers, and onion juice.
About the speaker
Dr. Denice Fett received her PhD in Early Modern European History from the Ohio State University. Her research centers on Reformation diplomacy in western Europe, with specific interests in intelligence networks, communication, information and news, and the culture of diplomacy.
