Abstract: For many people in the church today, asking gay Christians to refrain from entering romantic relationships or same-sex marriages seems to condemn those believers to a life of loneliness. Throughout the Christian tradition, celibacy has been understood as a freely chosen vocation, not something that's imposed as an unwanted rule from the outside. So why should we think that Christianity would impose celibacy on all gay and lesbian people today? Wesley Hill will address his understanding of being gay and celibate with this question in mind. Unpacking Thomas Aquinas's teaching on the theological virtue of 'hope,' which stands between unwarranted presumption that everything is already well and the equally unwarranted despair that everything is already ruined, he will discuss what it means to live a life of tension and grace now, in anticipation of Christ's second coming.
Dr. Wesley Hill is Professor of New Testament at Trinity School for Ministry in Pittsburgh. He received his B.A. from Wheaton College and his M.A. and PhD in theology from Durham University, U.K. Dr. Hill is the author of "Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality" and is currently working on a book on spiritual friendship.
