"Religion on a Business Basis: Making Conservative Protestantism in the Early Twentieth Century"

What could be more traditional than Protestant fundamentalism? Plenty it turns out. Starting in the 1870s, a group of forward-looking ministers, professionals, and business leaders created an “old time religion” for the modern age. They did this by self-consciously borrowing from the ideas and techniques of business. In the 1910s, they used this new way of being a “conservative Protestant” to form the basis of the fundamentalist movement. It remains central to conservative evangelicalism today. This talk will tell the story and then consider some of the implications to our understanding of modern American Protestantism.
About the Speaker
Timothy Gloege is the author of Guaranteed Pure: The Moody Bible Institute, Business and the Making of Modern Evangelicalism. He is an independent scholar and historian living in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has taught for the Calvin history department. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame, and his research focuses on American religious history in the late-19th and early-20th century.
