Traditional models of K-12 science community engagement often struggle to meaningfully support under-resourced schools and community groups. This talk will highlight an award-winning afterschool program for middle school students, Science Club, developed collaboratively by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools, and Northwestern University.
Science Club brings together scientist-mentors with middle school youth (grades 5-8) on a weekly basis to explore engaging curricula designed to build students’ self-confidence, raise STEM skills, and open long-term career paths. Scientist mentors benefit, too, with stronger teaching, science communication, and community engagement skills. Through its network of committed teachers, engaged youth development staff, and scientist mentors, Science Club has built a culture of science learning that actively bridges student learning in and out of school.
