Calvin's Physics and Astronomy Department welcomes back '21 alum Jackson Ross
to speak for their seminar on Tuesday, March 8 at 3:45. Jackson is pursuing his Ph.D. at York College in England, so this lecture will be virtual. His lecture is titled "Magnetism and the Multi-Scale Atomistic Simulation."
Magnetism in materials has fascinated mankind for millennia. The origin, properties, and manipulation of magnetism is a phenomenon that can be researched at any scale, from quantum size interactions with the vacuum to classical scale magnetic torque experiments. The advance of computational performance has lead to the emergence of a relatively new field for exploring magnetism: the multi-scale atomistic simulation. Atomistic scale modelling focuses on magnetic effects larger than individual electrons, but smaller than nanoparticle grains. This means both quantum and classical effects must be considered for each atom in a crystal; a massive computational challenge! In this talk, we present on some fundamental research methods and motivations for atomistic computational magnetism. We will also expand on current research to improve the capabilities of our in-lab developed code, VAMPIRE, by implementing a semi-quantum environment to simulate the conduction band heat bath’s effects on atomic scale magnetic processes.
