John Ubels, Ph.D. Professor of biology, Calvin College
Upon his retirement, Professor John Ubels will reflect on a career that began with an undergraduate interest in fish physiology. From deep uncertainty during his senior year at Calvin, he will describe a journey from research on fish retinas in graduate school at Michigan State to a career in ophthalmic research on the cornea, lacrimal gland, dry eye disease and artificial tears. Along the way he will explain how faculty positions at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Pittsburgh prepared him for teaching and research at Calvin, with a strong emphasis on the people whom God put in his life to promote and support his career. The journey comes full circle with a return to fish retinas and MSU. Most importantly for undergraduates who may also be uncertain about their career paths, Professor Ubels’ will share his perspective on how we come to see God’s plan and calling in our lives.
