Recipient
Professor Arden Post shaped many future teachers during her service in Calvin’s education department from 1985–2006. Her areas of passion included the teaching of reading, students with special needs, and teacher preparation.
Dr. Post also build connections with local schools where Calvin students could utilize the skills learned in her classroom. Her love of reading instruction prompted her to create the Alexander Literary Experience, a collaborative program with Alexander School, an urban, public elementary school in Grand Rapids. During her retirement, she has continued to mentor young students near her homes in Holland, Mich., and Bradenton, Fla. She shared her knowledge with parents as well, as her series of articles for parents, originally published in Christian Home and School magazine, were later collected in her book God's Pencils.
“Dr. Post has been the hands and heart of Christ to many,” said Lynden, Wash., educator Scott Vandenberg ’94. “Every time I look over my children’s books or assess reading in the students I work with, I think of her influence, advice, and direction.”
Another former student, Merideth Lappinga Volkema ’99, noted how her time in Dr. Post’s intro to special education class convinced her to change her major to special ed. “She believed in my future as a Calvin graduate and that I could make a difference in kids’ lives as a teacher,” Volkema said, “just like she had done for me and countless other students.”
