Calvin students present the latest research from Professor Anding Shen's lab
HIV infection has no cure and requires life-long therapy. In untreated patients and most successfully treated patients, there are intestinal pathologies, including massive depletion of T helper cells and bacterial translocation. We have found that intestinal endothelial cells promote HIV infection in T helper cells as well as latent reservoir formation. They do so in an integrin dependent manner in conjunction with the cytokine IL-6. The CCR6+ T helper 17 subpopulation is particularly susceptible to such endothelial cell promoted infection.
