The Mathematics and Statistics Department welcomes Dr. Brian Drake to speak at their February 3 Colloquium on "The Hidden Life of Series."
You are cordially invited to join us on February 3 for a social reception at 3:30 in the Reading Room, immediately followed by the lecture in NH 276.
In calculus we learn to represent functions as Taylor series and use these series for approximation and solving differential equations. In the field of enumerative combinatorics we look at series from a very different viewpoint. We consider them to be tools for organizing sequences of positive integers that count objects. We will see how this viewpoint is useful for studying Fibonacci numbers and related objects. We will also see how the tangent function has a hidden life counting trees.
