Floral nectar contains bacteria and yeast, which influence the quality and quantity of floral rewards. These microbial communities are ideal replicated microhabitats to study ecological theory, including the factors that influence community assembly, structure, and function. Further, accumulating research demonstrates that these microbes can significantly affect both plant reproduction and pollinators. I will share some of our recent work on nectar yeasts and bacteria, their influence on plant traits and pollinator behavior and health, and their potential for increasing effectiveness of biocontrol in agricultural systems.
Join the BIO295 class for this special presentation as we learn about agricultural applications of research and what their findings could mean for us.
