You Can’t Make a STEM without STEAM: Reinvigorating the Relationship Between Arts and Science
Rine Wakeman
Science and arts have historically been linked by necessity. As photography and digital imaging make it easier to share discoveries broadly, we need to be careful to hold on to the value in the act of creation. This talk will give an overview of scientific art through history – and the many benefits in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration rather than treating them as opposing vocations.
Comparing Insect Biodiversity in Residential Lawns and Curb-Cut Rain Gardens
Julia Klooster and Naomi Dykstra
To assess the effect of curb-cut rain gardens on insect biodiversity, samples were collected from 7 sites to perform a comparative insect population survey. Pit-fall traps and sweep netting were used to collect samples from both residential lawn and corresponding curb-cut rain garden 4 times over the summer of 2023. Insects were counted and carefully identified to determine relative biodiversity, and data indicate that curb-cut rain gardens support higher insect biodiversity than residential lawns.
