Feeding in the Water: How do Marine Environments alter the Mammalian Dentition?
Guest Speaker: Dr. Carlos Peredo- University of Michigan
Mammals owe a great deal of their evolutionary success to a key innovation: the tribosphenic molar, which facilitates mastication. My talk will use whales and pinnipeds as case studies, examining how mammals that have returned to the water modify the tribosphenic molar and return to a simplified dentition. We will discuss how the fossil record serves as a window into the past, showcasing several major changes in tooth anatomy and morphology, and then detail how those physical changes correspond to ecological and behavioral shifts in feeding mode.
