Liking and wanting usually go together for pleasant rewards, but the brain separates liking and wanting mechanisms.
This dissociation allows wanting to occur independently of liking, and even to create ‘wanting for what hurts’. In addiction, drug-induced sensitization of brain dopamine systems can amplify ‘wanting’ to maladaptively intense levels.
