Professor Sunukjian's lecture will begin at 3:40 pm and is entitled "The Amazing Hyperboloid." Join us in the Reading Room for refreshments at 3:30, immediately followed by the lecture in room NH 276.
Five-hundred years ago, Christopher Wren was looking at a basket full of salt. Somehow, this inspired him to invented an ingenious method for grinding hyperbolic lenses. Somehow this is discovery is related to the reason hyperboloid towers are both strong and economical to build. And somehow this is related to a cleaver proof of Pascal’s hexagon theorem from projective geometry. Come and learn the connections between these things. Special guests will include the circle, the straight line, the ellipse, and the hyperbola.
