Members of the Calvin community are invited to attend a Chemistry Department seminar artist talk with Rebekah Sweda as she shares about her work as a scientist and artist, and how her practice is informed by her cross-disciplinary approach.
This presentation is given in conjunction with "The Derived Vessel," on view at the Center Art Gallery, February 15–April 23.
"The Derived Vessel" Exhibition Statement:
I am evolving the vessel.
Deriving the vessel is influenced by the calculus equation used to find the area under a curvet–to cut up a curve in order to account for the whole. The slices reveal more information, showing what was always there but not naturally seen.
The balance of negative and positive space created through slicing vessels is the base of my work. I innovate, experiment, and derive these thrown vessels. I want to make something new of what the vessel has to offer, taking something utilitarian into the sculptural. I am creating shape and blurring the lines of the interior and exterior of vessels.
– Rebekah Sweda, 2018 alumna, BA Chemistry and Studio Art
"The Derived Vessel" exhibition is co-sponsored by the Center Art Gallery and the Department of Visual and Performing Art, and was supported in part by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
Seating is limited.
