"Christian Philosophy and Advocacy"
This fall, Calvin College celebrates the establishment of the W. H. Jellema Chair in Christian Philosophy. Professor Kevin Timpe, current holder of the chair, will give an inaugural address. This evening promises to be a reflection of a goal dear to the heart of William Harry Jellema: the advancement of Christian philosophy.
The lecture and reception following are open to the public.
About the Jellema Chair
William Harry Jellema was the first philosophy professor at Calvin College in 1921. Through his vision, teaching, and mentorship, the philosophy department grew into a respected and leading voice advancing the project of Christian philosophy. Jellema invested his life in the practice of excellent Christian philosophical thinking. He valued the intellectual life as God-honoring and faithful philosophical reflection as a gift. His students went on to shape the contours of the discipline of philosophy, the college, and the culture for the kingdom. Through the philosophy department’s work—and now especially through the William Harry Jellema Chair—his legacy in Christian philosophy will continue to flourish.
About Prof. Timpe
Prior to coming to Calvin College as the W. H. Jellema Chair in Christian Philosophy, Kevin Timpe taught at the University of San Diego and Northwest Nazarene University. He has also held fellowships at Oxford University and the University of Notre Dame. He is the authors of Free Will: Sourcehood and Its Alternatives ( 2nd edition 2013) and Free Will in Philosophical Theology (2014) and editor of six volumes, most recently (with Meghan Griffith and Neil Levy) the Routledge Companion to Free Will. His scholarship focuses primary on the metaphysics of free will, issues in the philosophy of religion, virtue ethics, and the philosophy of disability. He and his wife have three children: Jameson, Emmaline, and Magdalen. In 2015, they started an advocacy company for families with disabilities, 22 Advocacy.
