The third debate in the Constitution Series will tackle the subject of free speech, with varying viewpoints about the extent of this First Amendment protection.
The American political tradition has always valued free speech, but we have also wrestled with the boundaries. Does free speech include hate speech? And who gets to decide where the boundaries are set? What does the Constitution say about this matter? We will think about these matters while exercising the right to free speech at our third debate in the series. Doug Koopman and Micah Watson will be joined by representatives from Calvin's College Democrats and College Republicans to debate various opinions about the scope and extent of free speech protections.
Immediately afterwards, a forum for Calvin students will continue the conversation at "Debate Over Dinner" -- in the lower level lobby of the building, beginning at 5 p.m. Dinner will be provided, but students must RSVP in advance to participate (contact mas72).
The Constitution Series is sponsored by the College Democrats, the College Republicans, the Henry Institute, the Political Science Department, and the Pre-Law Program.
