Joshua Ruiter will give a lecture "The General Linear Group is a Beautiful Buttefly" at the Mathematics & Statistics Colloquim
on September 16, 2021 from 3:40 to 4:30. Joshua is a Ph.D. candidate at Michigan State University. Join us for the lecture and then at the Fall Picnic immediately following.
The group of n-by-n invertible matrices is useful in many areas of mathematics, such as solving systems of linear equations. It also has a lot of internal structure, which will be my focus. We'll talk about the various parts of this group that correspond to the torso, wings, and pins of a pinned butterfly specimen you might see in a museum.
