The Mathematics and Statistics Departmen Colloquium welcomes Dr. Sarah Nelson on March 25.
Dr, Sarah Nelson of Lenior-Rhyne University will be the featured speaker at the Mathematics & Statistics Colloquium on Thursday, March 25 at 3:40. Join your classmates and colleagues to hear her talk entitled: "Drop the Group-Join the Team!"
How do we make the most of the student learning experience? What skills can we nurture in our students as they learn our content? These questions direct my teaching practices, so I am intentional about facilitating an inquiry based learning environment in which students develop their communication skills. In particular, I create learning teams. Working together helps level the playing field for all of my students while encouraging them all to learn the material in a deeper way. Students hone their communication skills as they work with their teammates throughout the different stages of the learning process, including assessment. In this talk, I will discuss my journey towards building more effective team work practices and assessments. I will share my observations, what I have learned along the way, how I have adjusted to COVID, and more.
