Analysis of bacterial DNA collected from urban infrastructure can reveal both general and specific characteristics of a city's environment and population. Wastewater and stormwater sewers are a key feature of urban systems and serve as collectors of the "indoor" and "outdoor" microbiomes of a city. Urban runoff contains bacteria from impervious surfaces, soils, and wildlife, while sanitary sewage conveys bacteria from humans.
