Thapelo Khumalo (DPhil Candidate - PhD, Church History, North-West University) will be presenting on "The Role of the Holy in Spirit in Ecumenical Relations: Calvin’s Reply to Sadoleto".
Abstract:
The 1539 response of John Calvin to Bishop Jacopo Sadoleto has received considerable attention in Calvin scholarship. However, few scholars have recognized its ecumenical contribution, especially in the field of pneumatology. In my presentation, I will provide a summary of my research on the role of the Holy Spirit in church unity in light of Calvin's doctrine of the Word and Spirit . For orientation, I will first highlight the context of the correspondence between Sadoleto and Calvin. Second, I will examine Sadoleto's letter to the Genevans for his perspective on the role of the Holy Spirit in church unity. Finally, we will consider Calvin's perspective as expressed in his response to Sadoleto.
Nathan Wallace (DPhil Candidate in Theology, University of Oxford) will be presenting on "John Calvin and the 'Disenchantment' of the Eucharist: A Critique of Charles Taylor's Phenomenology"
Abstract:
In A Secular Age (2007), Charles Taylor argues that John Calvin ‘disenchanted’ the Eucharist. To critically assess Taylor’s argument, this presentation considers: (1) the influence of German Romanticism on his notion of ‘enchantment’; (2) his philosophically innovative, phenomenological approach to tracing the rise of modern unbelief; and (3) evidence from Calvin’s ministry that offers a contrasting picture of Reformed liturgy and its redemptive spirituality.
