Abstract: Because of the elevated place given to romantic love in our culture, it can be difficult for those who are single and celibate to feel that a life of giving and receiving love is open to them in the same way it is to married couples. Gay and lesbian Christians may feel this lack especially keenly, since—current legislative debates notwithstanding—their friendships and loves are not often recognized as enduring and meaningful. In an effort to help the church engage with these questions and areas of concern, Wesley Hill will discuss the Christian tradition of 'spiritual friendship' and some ways we might begin to revive and recover that tradition in today's church.
Dr. Wesley Hill is Professor of New Testament at Trinity School for Ministry in Pittsburgh. He received his B.A. from Wheaton College and his M.A. and PhD in theology from Durham University, U.K. Dr. Hill is the author of "Washed and Waiting: Reflections on Christian Faithfulness and Homosexuality" and is currently working on a book on spiritual friendship.
