Title: Physiological Function of Two Invasive Species in Various Habitats
Summary: Common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) and Glossy buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) are non-native invasive plant species. Though they are “sisters”, Common buckthorn seems to predominate sun rich environments while glossy buckthorn prefers moist habitats and tolerates shade. The objective of this project is to compare the growth rate and photosynthetic light use efficiency of the buckthorn with one another and key native competing plants in two distinct habitats, open sun and shaded understory. Results from the study have showed significant evidence that Common buckthorn live more in open sun areas and glossy buckthorn in shaded areas.

Title: Water Disinfection in Rural Ecuador
Summary: In her talk, Regan will discuss the concern of clean water from biological, chemical and public health standpoints. She will also present an overview of the chemistry of water quality testing in rural areas, including chlorination.
