Reviving the Civic Mission of Christian Schools: A Workshop in Civics Education
June 11-14, 2018
David Smith (Kuyers Institute; Graduate Studies in Education)
Kevin R. den Dulk (Henry Institute; Political Science)
This workshop seeks to strengthen civics education through an intensive program of professional development for teachers in Christian secondary schools and teacher educators who focus on government, history, or other civics-oriented areas. We will focus on pedagogies that can meet the unique challenges of teaching and learning about civic life in the current political and societal climate. The workshop is open to teachers and teacher educators who are committed to Christian civics education but are searching for a rare developmental opportunity to build vision and resources. Two semester hours of graduate credit are available through Calvin’s Graduate Studies in Education Program. In addition, 50 SCECH will be awarded by the State of Michigan.
This seminar is designed for teachers and teacher educators, and is offered at no cost to those participants who are selected. Space is limited. Lunch is provided each day. Non-local participants are also eligible for a $500 stipend to cover lodging, transportation, and additional meals. A set of resources will be sent one month in advance of the seminar. Professional education or graduate credit fees are the responsibility of participants.
Application deadline is March 30. Participants will be notified of their selection by April 13.
All applicants should submit a resume, letter of reference (preferably from a teaching supervisor), and a 250-word essay on why you are interested in participating. Send materials to kuyers@calvin.edu or:
