- Teams Meeting
The Mathematics and Statistics Department welcomes Dr. Ricardo J. Cordero-Soto as their speaker for the February 10 Colloquium.
Dr. Cordero-Soto is a Professor of Mathematics at California Baptist University. His lecture will be entitled "Opioid Addition: The Social Dynamics of an Unavoidable Crisis."
Opioid related deaths are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, ahead of motor vehicle accidents and gun related deaths. In the following study, we consider three different groups of people: non-users, the medical users, and the non-medical users. By following known assumptions of the dynamics between these three groups, we formulate a system of differential equations to analyze the interactions and influences between these three groups. Upon analysis of the system, we find that while the interactions between these groups seem to preserve the Opioid crisis, there are ways to curtail this status quo.
Students are welcome to meet at the Reading Room at 3:30 for a social time, and then the lecture will begin via Teams at 3:40.
