Cardiogenic pain can easily be misdiagnosed when physical manifestations of emotional distress are present. This professional development opportunity seeks to close the gap in knowledge, skills, and practice by helping nurses to understand their full scope of practice, conduct a full seven-point pain assessment, and partner with medical providers to ensure patients are receiving appropriate care.

- Contact Hours: 3 total hours
- Blended learning with one asynchronous contact hour prior to in-person training to be completed through learn.calvin.edu (link to the course will be provided following registration) and two in-person contact hours on May 11, 2023 from 11am-1pm at Pine Rest

Learning outcomes:
After completing the three contact hours, participants will be able to
- Explain cardiogenic causes of chest pain;
- Describe somatic symptoms of anxiety;
- Identify inpatient psychiatric clients who are, based on comorbid conditions, at higher risk for experiencing cardiac emergencies;
- Execute a focused nursing assessment of the inpatient psychiatric client with chest pain;
- Select appropriate nursing interventions based on assessment findings for the inpatient psychiatric client with chest pain; and
- Demonstrate functioning within the nursing role in regard to caring for the inpatient psychiatric client with chest pain.
This training satisfies the Michigan Public Health Code and board administrative requirements as three continuing education contact hours in pain and pain symptom management for Michigan nurses.
