Many cetaceans have evolved to possess extraordinary anatomical and physiological adaptations that allow them to forage at great depths for prolonged durations. However, performing these dives comes with an energetic cost that often requires these animals to alter their surface behavior between bouts of dives. In this study, we discovered that short-finned pilot whales exhibit three main surface behavioral states: social group reorganization, resting and traveling, and impending dive preparation. We also observed that the distinction between these three behavioral states is altered depending on the previous dive’s depth, duration, and foraging level.
