This spring, join Plaster Creek Stewards to learn more about trees as watershed-healers through a brief presentation and plant over a hundred trees in our community!

Little buds pop out of warming branches. Leaves unfurl as the sun brightens, and birdsong returns in the morning. The leaves of last year rustle as squirrels wake from their chilly naps. The trees around us, wherever they are, remind us that it’s spring.

This spring, we’re taking a closer look at these constant companions to our urban, suburban, and rural lives.

While we’re familiar with trees as heralders of seasons, sidewalk shade-givers, fruit-bearers, animal homes, meeting points, and childhood playgrounds, trees are also healers of our environments.

For this reason, we and many others involved in ecological restoration are using trees to heal our watershed.

On April 24, 9am-12pm, join us to learn more about these watershed-healers through a brief presentation and then plant over a hundred trees in our community.

The presentation will explore the expansive benefits of Michigan native trees, and in particular how they can be used to clean up Plaster Creek, the most contaminated water way in West Michigan. We will learn about basic native tree installation and care, and in looking at the issues of Plaster Creek, we will learn how trees are an important tool in managing our stormwater and the base of our urban ecosystems.

The tree-planting to follow will take place at 3 independent locations across our watershed. Call us over-eager, but our goal is to have enough volunteers to get 100 trees in the ground by noon! Please RSVP to let us know in which planting you’ll participate. Bring a mask to work in, clothes for the dirt and weather, and a water bottle. We ask that you bring your own shovel for digging if you are able.
