The Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble performs "New Orleans jazz music at its best!"
Returning to Calvin College for their fifth appearance in The January Series, the nine-member Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble brings to West Michigan the unique and enduring sound of New Orleans jazz, as only they can recreate it. Founded in 1980 by clarinetist S. Frederick Starr, also a widely recognized authority on Russia and a presenter in this year's series, the group plays on original, turn-of-the-century jazz ensemble instruments. Deftly performing the legendary 1890 to 1930 New Orleans jazz classics, the group enjoys enthusiastic acclaim from all ages and all cultures. As ambassadors of goodwill for the inimitable sound of New Orleans jazz music, the LRJE attracts standing room only audiences throughout the U.S. and France, Hong Kong, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Russia.
