American mastodon (Mammut americanum) fossils have been found across North America, from the east to the west coast, from Alaska to Mexico, and nearly everywhere in between. In this talk I will examine the current understanding of mastodon morphology, distribution, and causes of extinction for North American mastodons through the exploration of two well-preserved specimens, “Max,” from southern California, and “Chas,” from South Carolina, with the ultimate goal of providing insight into what these differences mean.
