Statistical modeling serves an important function in the development and use of educational and psychological tests. This talk provides an overview of some models used for that purpose, and considers the potential for such models to help inform what it is what such tests measure and how well they measure it. An application is considered in which a statistical model provides a mechanism by which cross-cultural differences in the use of rating scale categories on a self-report survey instrument can be studied and controlled. The model is considered using data from a cross-national study of the psychological construct of conscientiousness.
