Senior Physics major, Evan Cook, will present a seminar on April 2 about Mayan Astronomy
The Calvin College Physics and Astronomy Department invites you to a seminar entitled “Understanding Maya Astronomy Through Their Art, Architecture, and Writings ” presented by Calvin senior Physics major, Evan Cook, on April 2 at 3:45 p.m. in SB 110.
What did the Maya know about astronomy? What led them to take high precision measurements of the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets? In this talk, I examine the significance of astronomy to Maya religion, culture, and record-keeping, as well as outline some of their major observational achievements. Throughout the presentation, we will look at pieces of art, architecture, and written material produced by the Maya to guide our exploration of Maya astronomy.
Refreshments will be served at 3:30 in SB 157.
