A presentation by Hessel Bouma of the Calvin College biology department. A small but significant number of persons are neither clearly male nor female but "intersexed." Biomedically, these persons are described as having disorders of sexual development (DSD). Given how fundamental our sexual identities are to us as persons, intersexed persons experience substantial psychosocial pressures. This presentation will look briefly at the biomedical basis of sexual development, the primary condition of DSD, some of the psychosocial challenges, and a Christian perspective on understanding human sexuality.
