Investigating Lipid – Ion Channel Biophysics Using Electrophysiology and Temperature Control
You are cordially invited to join along with other Physics and Astronomy students and faculty on Tuesday, October 5 for a research presentation by Calvin professor Loren Haarsma and students Judah Manoraj, David Ruiter, and Einstein Essibu. Light refreshments will be served in SB 157 at 3:30, followed by the presentation at 3:45 in SB110.
Bilayers of lipid molecules form the basis of cell membranes. Ion channels control of the flow of ions through bilayers. We are developing a system to study changes in ion channel gating activity while systematically varying the type of lipid and its temperature, as a means to study the basic biophysics of these molecules. We’ll report on progress made during summer 2021 in temperature control, data analysis, and lipid selection, as well as some challenges that remain to be solved.
