Join us in the Meeter Center (fourth floor of Hekman Library) for a free public lecture by Alden McCray, a Meeter Center Visiting Fellow: "He reasons from the nature of God": Reassessing Calvin on the Divine Attributes
Abstract:
For much of the twentieth century, the alleged absence of the divine attributes from Calvin's theology was used to underscore the supposed disjunction between Calvin and his theological forebears and successors, as well as to critique the doctrine of the divine attributes as incompatible with good biblically-based theology. However, building on renewed attention to Calvin in this area, I will demonstrate that Calvin held to a very traditional account of the divine attributes, believed that they were revealed in scripture, and that they had a significant pastoral function in his account of being human as knowing and mirroring the divine nature.
